The Lawless Years is the first television crime drama set during the Roaring 20s, having predated ABC's far more successful The Untouchables with Robert Stack by six months. The 47-episode half-hour series aired nonconsecutively on NBC from April 16 to August 27, 1959, from October 1, 1959, to January 19, 1960, and, finally, from May 12 to September 22, 1961. It starred James Gregory as real-life NYPD Detective Barney Ruditsky, with Robert Karnes as Max, his associate. Ruditsky, who had become...

An episode of the popular CBS-TV drama/comedy "Mama" (AKA "I Remember Mama"), a 1950s series about a family living in the 1910s. Episode "Queen of the Bee" of the popular early television series "Mama". Dagmar wants to win the spelling bee contest, while her father places a bet. It is almost interesting that we are in the 2010s, with this 1950s TV show, set in the 1910s! Complete with original commercials and note about summer schedule break.

Set in post-World War II New York City, the show closely followed the format of early Ellery Queen mystery novels where, before presenting the solution, a "Challenge To The Reader" was issued: the reader was challenged to guess the solution to the crime. In the series this tradition was followed by having Ellery Queen (Jim Hutton) "break the fourth wall," reviewing key clues and asking the audience if they knew the solution. The final act always used the time-honored...

Pulp magazines (often referred to as "the pulps"), also collectively known as pulp fiction, refers to inexpensive fiction magazines published from 1896 through the 1950s. The typical pulp magazine was seven inches wide by ten inches high, half an inch thick, and 128 pages long. Pulps were printed on cheap paper with ragged, untrimmed edges. The name pulp comes from the cheap wood pulp paper on which the magazines were printed. Magazines printed on better paper were called...

The first regular radio series by the master absurdist improvisors, on Boston's WHDH, between 1946 and 1951. These are the few such shows known to have survived for today's listening. Bob Elliott was a WHDH morning DJ; Ray Goulding did the news on the hour, and what began as occasional little ad-libbed buffoonery became a regular series when WHDH asked them to do 25 minutes before a Red Sox or Braves game or to go on during rain delays.
